I have always been told that people tend to get used to spinning around after doing flips and, eventually, no longer feel dizzy, but what exactly is it that allows an athlete to be able to do this? The answer is neuroplasticity.

Neuroplasticity is the brain’s ability to reorganize itself by forming new neural connections throughout life, not just during childhood. It allows neurons in the brain to compensate for injury, disease, and adjust for activities in response to new situations or changes in the environment like spinning a lot. When a person spins around during an activity like dancing or gymnastics the neurons in the brain learn to suppress the sensations of spinning and filter them out as being non-relevant feedback, changing the structure of the brain and allowing the athlete to focus on other parts of their exercise. The brain and body are amazing!
