El Caribe

My husband and I went snorkeling together in El Caribe a while back. The mangroves there have huge patches of lush, underwater grass that tiny sea horses like to hide in. There are also some interesting, low tunnels made of trees and water that we snorkeled through in the mangroves. There were not any snakes, so…

Castle of Spirits – Bojnice, Slovakia

The Castle of Spirits is the beautiful home to the International Festival of Ghosts and Spirits. I have been to Slovakia, but did not get to visit it. It seems to have some amazing ghost stories surrounding it. http://www.everycastle.com/Bojnice-Castle.html

The National Center For Biotechnology Information

The National Center for Biotechnology Information website is one of my favorite websites (www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov). It can be used for many things. You can look up articles in various databases such as PubMed and PubChem. You can mine the genome using a BLAST (Basic Local Alignment Search Tool) search, and you can get information about how…

Why Do Leaves Change Color?

Leaves are food-making factories that change colors because the green chlorophyll begins to disappear during the Fall. During the winter the trees are at rest and live off of the food that they have stored up during the summer. Some of the colors seen in leaves such as orange and yellow had been there all…

Ryokan

A ryokan is a traditional Japanese inn. I stayed at one when I visited Japan with my husband, my brother, Eric, and some friends. It was beautiful! I loved the exquisite food, the lady’s bath, the tatami mats, the fancy futon that we slept on, and the beautiful scenery. If I could live in a…

Bruce Lee

Bruce Lee was a hero in a time where the Chinese were stereotyped as railroad workers and meek house servants. He was a genius who was able to synthesize various national martial techniques used in unarmed combat. Spin Ice

Monopoles, magnetic forces without a di-pole have been shown to exist in a substance called spin ice. Spin ice is composed of holmium titanate, molecules that have a tetrahedral formation. When corralled, the ions cannot align their spin in one direction leaving the two spins pointing inwards in the tetrahedron. When a magnetic field is…

NPR reports that oceanographers have found a new life-form that can survive on chemicals alone at the bottom of the Pacific Ocean.  http://www.npr.org/2011/12/05/142678239/the-deep-sea-find-that-changed-biology?sc=fb&cc=fp These life-forms are worms (Riftia pachyptilla). Scarab Beetle (Shining Leaf Chafer)

My husband found a beetle and brought it home for me to look at. It appears to be a lovely anomala marginata, scarab beetle (shining leaf chafer). These beetles eat foliage and fruit and their larvae feed on roots and decaying vegetation. This beetle is so pretty that some cultures would turn it into jewelry….
