A while back I was fortunate enough to be able to was a comedic opera called H.M.S. Pinafore. This opera was about a very funny ship captain in England’s military who was trying to marry his daughter, Josephine, off to a wealthy, but annoying, lord, Sir Joseph Porter. She tried to be a dutiful daughter and give Sir Joseph a chance, but was already in love with the lower-class sailor, Ralph Rackstraw. Eventually, she heard of Sir Joseph’s sympathies for the lower-class and decided that it would probably be alright with him if she married Ralph Rackstraw instead of him. Sir Joseph and her father were not happy about this and sent Ralph to the ship’s dungeon.

Things were looking gloomy until an unexpected turn of events occurred. A large and funny gypsy woman who was called little buttercup throughout the show revealed that the ship’s captain had been switched with Ralph at birth and the queen of England miraculously ended up coming upon the ship after hers had run into some trouble. The queen set everything right, and, as a side-story, seemed to know one of the ship’s lower-class sailors.

In conclusion, I really enjoyed watching this opera and recommend it to anyone in need of a good laugh!
