{"id":511,"date":"2021-12-02T20:18:42","date_gmt":"2021-12-02T20:18:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.smoth.net\/Krystal\/?p=511"},"modified":"2021-12-02T20:18:42","modified_gmt":"2021-12-02T20:18:42","slug":"why-rudolphs-nose-is-red-observational-study","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.smoth.net\/Krystal\/why-rudolphs-nose-is-red-observational-study\/","title":{"rendered":"Why Rudolph&#8217;s Nose Is Red: Observational Study"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>When a reindeer&#8217;s nose turns red it helps the reindeer regulate the temperature of its brain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/345\/bmj.e8311\">http:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/345\/bmj.e8311<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Abstract<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Objective<\/strong> To characterise the functional morphology of the nasal microcirculation in humans in comparison with reindeer as a means of testing the hypothesis that the luminous red nose of Rudolph, one of the most well known reindeer pulling Santa Claus\u2019s sleigh, is due to the presence of a highly dense and rich nasal microcirculation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Design<\/strong> Observational study.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Setting<\/strong> Troms\u00f8, Norway (near the North Pole), and Amsterdam, the Netherlands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Participants<\/strong> Five healthy human volunteers, two adult reindeer, and a patient with grade 3 nasal polyposis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Main outcome measures<\/strong> Architecture of the microvasculature of the nasal septal mucosa and head of the inferior turbinates, kinetics of red blood cells, and real time reactivity of the microcirculation to topical medicines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Results<\/strong> Similarities between human and reindeer nasal microcirculation were uncovered. Hairpin-like capillaries in the reindeers\u2019 nasal septal mucosa were rich in red blood cells, with a perfused vessel density of 20 (SD 0.7) mm\/mm2. Scattered crypt or gland-like structures surrounded by capillaries containing flowing red blood cells were found in human and reindeer noses. In a healthy volunteer, nasal microvascular reactivity was demonstrated by the application of a local anaesthetic with vasoconstrictor activity, which resulted in direct cessation of capillary blood flow. Abnormal microvasculature was observed in the patient with nasal polyposis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Conclusions<\/strong> The nasal microcirculation of reindeer is richly vascularised, with a vascular density 25% higher than that in humans.
